VENICE: (85 Km)

Today, the city of Venice is divided into the following six districts: Dorsoduro, Santa Croce, San Polo, San Marco, Cannaregio and Castello; it covers 118 little isles linked by 354 bridges and divided by 177 canals. Piazza San Marco can be regarded as the "heart of the city centre", and by definition it is the only square in Venice (the other ones being actually "campi" or "campielli"), one of the most beautiful ones in the world with the basilica having the same name, the Palazzo Ducale and the bell tower of San Marco. Another symbol of the city is the Ponte di Rialto with its typical old shops. Some other important Venetian monuments include the Arsenale (the naval dockyard), the church of Santa Maria della Salute, the basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, the synagogues in the ghetto. The main canals of the city are the Canal Grande and the Canale della Giudecca. Having a S shape, the former cuts the city in two parts, whereas the second one divides the historical centre from the isle of Giudecca.
